Andzej Wajda was born on March 6, 1926, in the Polish town of Suwalki.
His father, Jakub Wajda, an officer, was executed in the Katyn Massacre, while his mother, Anela, worked as a school teacher. From his childhood, Andzej remembered the barracks where his family lived, endless military parades, frequent funerals, and of course, war, a theme that permeated all of the director's work.
